NEW SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLDThe Great Wall of China The Taj Mahal, in India Machu Picchu, in Peru The statue of Christ the Redeemer, in Brazil The Colosseum, in Italy The Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, in Mexico Petra, in Jordan ANCIENT SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLDThe Hanging Gardens of Babylon Statue of Zeus at Olympia Temple of Artemis at Ephesus Mausoleum of Halicarnassus Colossus of Rhodes Pharos lighthouse off Alexandria The Great Pyramids of Giza New Seven Wonders of the World namedThe Great Wall of China and India's Taj Mahal are among landmarks chosen in a global vote as the new Seven Wonders of the World, say the Swiss organisers. The seven sites were announced in a glittering and star-studded ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal, after a reputed 100 million people cast their ballots via internet or by phone. Machu Picchu in Peru, Brazil's Statue of Christ the Redeemer, the Colosseum in Rome, the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza in Mexico and Jordan's Petra also made the list. They beat 14 other nominated landmarks, which included the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty and the Sydney Opera House. The only Swiss candidate for the world wonders, the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne, failed to make it into the top 21. The vote, said to be the largest ever of its kind, was organised by the Zurich-based non-profit organisation, New7Wonders. "Never before in history have so many people participated in a global decision," US actress Hilary Swank said at the presentation on Saturday evening. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World were selected by the Greek philosopher Philon more than 2,000 years ago. The Pyramids of Giza are the only one of the original wonders still standing. They have been given honorary status in addition to the new seven wonders after Egyptian officials complained it was undignified that the pyramids had to compete in an online poll. They really ought to have two lists: a natural and man-made list.
The only manmade thing I would keep would be the Great Wall. That is impressive since it is visible from space.

Are you sure, Dr. Beaner? Many caver's egos contain an *awful lot* of hot helium-inflated space inside them.
Not moi. I have the opposite problem. Although I'm pretty sure of what's right for me, I don't have the assurance to insist my ideas are gold-standard for anyone else.

They really ought to have two lists: a natural and man-made list. Interestingly enough they are planning exactly that - a list of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. They must be reading this forum. ;D Between now and August 8, 2008 anyone can nominate their favorite natural monuments and/or sites they believe should be included on the list. Then a panel of experts will create a list of 21 candidates from which voters worldwide will be able to select the 7 wonders of nature. www.new7wonders.com/CriteriaNominations must be for a clearly defined natural site or natural monument that was NOT created or significantly altered by humans. Physical or natural phenomena like the northern lights, the gulf stream or shooting stars are not eligible. The nominees MUST be one of the following: * natural site * natural monument * landscape Categories for Natural Wonder Nominations Animal Reserve Canyon, Fjord Cave, Grotto Coastline, Cliff Forest, Wood Geological site Glacier Mountain, Volcano, Rocks Nature Conservancy Park Oasis , Deserts Prehistoric natural site Underwater World, Reef Water, Sea, Lake, River Waterfall other See this link for examples: www.new7wonders.com/I've already nominated Mammoth Cave and the Grand Canyon, both obvious choices in the U.S. I'm sure others can come up with several other qualifying sites.

Well maybe you're right since they all lack substance and probably can't really be seen from space. It was a fun thought to ponder however.

Criteria Nominations must be for a clearly defined natural site or natural monument that was NOT created or significantly altered by humans. But would they consider Mammoth Cave altered by humans? When they commercialized it they significantly altered the cave, so Mammoth may not qualify as a true 'natural' wonder now.

I don't know if Mammoth will be accepted as a natural wonder now or not. I was hoping the cave would qualify, but perhaps not. Lech could be nominated as a natural wonder.

I don't know how picky their rules are on a "natural wonder". It could very well be that a modified natural wonder could get in the running. I agree Lechugilla and even Sótano de las Golondrinas should be nominated.

Lechugilla and Golondrinas are both good choices. Wonder if cave formations would be acceptable as a Geological site? For instance, the Helictites in Fern Cave, the Snowy River Passage in Fort Stanton Cave, or the Tesla Coil, just to name a few notable cave formations.
