It is possible that the DVD release will be for the UK only - most the websites featuring "The Descent" DVD report it is a "region 2" DVD. The US and Canada use "region 1" formatting. Checking Amazon.com, I found the film to be listed, but only as a film opening nationwide on December 2.
Perhaps this well-regarded British caving film will finally see the light of day in America at the theaters.

The British caving film "The Descent" will be released in the United States on Friday, August 4. For the trailer of the film, visit the official movie website at www.thedescentfilm.com/. From the preview, this film looks much more realistic than "The Cave." The site also has a discussion board, but not much action as of yet.

Cool! Thanks for the update Floyd. Sometimes having region free DVD playing equipment could come in very handy!

Here is a overview of The Descent's plotline. In a remote mountain range, six female friends meet for their yearly adventure, a caving trip into the arteries of the earth. Leader of the trip is Juno, tough, compelling and dangerous. Along for the ride are Swedish sisters Rebecca and Sam, wild base jumper Holly, and English teacher Beth, who has reluctantly come to look after Sarah. Sarah is still recovering from a total mental breakdown after the deaths of her husband and child one year previously, and needs this trip to reclaim the life she once had. It soon becomes clear that Sarah is not fully recovered, and that the hallucinations and memories that have dogged her for the past year are still very much hovering over her. But Juno shrugs off Beth’s worries—Sarah is her best and oldest friend, and she is going to make this work. Together, the group makes their way through the remote cave system, enjoying the hazardous but beautiful surroundings. Then, deep inside the cave, disaster strikes when their route back to the surface is blocked by a rockfall. When they learn that Juno, always pushing herself that little bit further, has brought them to an unexplored cave, and that no one is coming to rescue them, the group starts to splinter. But left with no option, they push on through the cave, praying for another exit. The women battle through this harsh underground world, pitting their strength and determination against each new challenge. But there is something else lurking under the earth, a race of monstrous creatures hidden from the light, devolved to perfectly live in the dark… As the women realize they have become prey, they are forced to unleash their most primal instincts to face the creatures. But, as old wounds break open and loyalties disintegrate, the women realize the horrible truth—that they have most to fear from one another. www.moviesonline.ca/film1354.htm

Why is it that Every cave movie out there has "creatures adapted to live in total darkness" that prey on humans? Knowing a bit about how little food is available in caves makes it likely that a large cave dweling animal would eat us is one thing - but by the same logic a large animal could not exist for long in the food poor cave environment either. Aren't caves scary and exotic enough to stand on their own for entertainment? What about simply getting lost, losing lights, and starving or freezing to death? Falling down pits, rockfall, getting stuck, cold water, bad air.....Aint it enough? Too normal I suppose.

Film screening a real ‘underground’ experience7/23/2006 You've heard of underground film, but horror fans went way underground for a special screening Saturday at Longhorn Caverns in Burnet County. The Alamo Drafthouse’s Rolling Roadshow held the “Ultimate Descent” experience in honor of a new horror movie hitting theaters soon. The Descent follows a group of six female spelunkers exploring an uncharted cave where things go horribly awry. The 2005 British film is set the Appalachian Mountains. It’s doesn’t star any big names, but director Neil Marshall has gotten good reviews for creating a terrifying film about being trapped in a cave and tormented by bloodthirsty creatures. After the screening, moviegoers had to brave their own path through the creepy crevasses of Longhorn Caverns. "I think the people on the Wild Tour after watching this movie are either very brave or very stupid. Really it's just the fear of claustrophobia that you have to watch out for on this one," Alamo Drafthouse owner Tim League said. Cave guide Chris Delill disagrees. He said the scariest things in Longhorn Caverns are the people who take the tours. Fortunately, everyone made it out of the cave OK, although the same can’t be said for the characters in the film. www.news8austin.com/content/headlines/?ArID=167190&SecID=2

The Descent Ravenous troglodytes intrude on a spelunking adventureSomething of a low-budget retread of the "Alien" films, the bloody fright flick "The Descent" still is far better than most of the cliché-ridden dreck that passes for horror. The story of six women who encounter rabidly carnivorous humanoids during a trek into an Appalachian cave system has some genuine cleverness in both its setup and the eventual gory mayhem it unleashes Article
