Look inward for a taste of traditional Cyprus Last Updated: 12:01am BST 15/09/2007 Page 1 of 3 Away from its busy coast, Cyprus offers beauty, solitude and a fascinating glimpse of history, says James Bedding. On her platform halfway up the cliff, Marianna the cat half-opened one eye, twitched her whiskers, and purred. Her minder, an elderly gent with a shiny pate and a sparkling magnifying glass, inspected the day's news in the local paper. Kykkos is Cyprus's most famous monastery The sound of cicadas and the scent of wild mint drifted up from the wooded canyon behind us. The tranquillity of the scene would probably have appealed to the man who was the reason for the couple's presence. He was one Neophytos, a Cypriot who came to this remote spot in the hills above Paphos in about 1160 to live a life of solitude - in a cave halfway up the cliff. www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/main.jhtml?xml=/travel/2007/09/15/et-cyprus-115.xml
