One Tank Trips: Hidden Lava BedsAugust 24, 2007 By John Iander There is a side of Northern California many people haven't seen. Up in Siskiyou County beneath mountains of ancient lava, there's a hidden world. A world you step down into. There are miles of tubes formed over thousands of years by lava flowing from an erupting volcano. The lava was nearly 2,000 degrees and left walls of sculptured rock. The eruptions went on for eons. The cave is a cross between nature and Disneyland. This is the only one the National Parks Service has lighted, installed pathways and interpretive signs. Each of the 900 tubes was once a molten river of lava. Article and Video
