Frankly,,,,,,,,I don't know. If you read the history of the issue, its apparent that the PSD is bound and determined to push this through,,,,,,,,even though it's been proven to be an insane venture. I find it hard to beleve there are no federal environmental laws to prevent this sort of thing, but its been going on for a few years now. Brighter people than me have worked on this a long time and have not been able to stop it. I don't know what else to do that they have'nt, except to get as many people to raise as much hell as they can. Thanks again! Ralph

IMHO, Karst is the last place in the world to even think about putting a Sewage Treatment Plant -- but for some reason it seems it is always the first choice by the powers-that-be. Actually after being involved in the Rumbling Falls Cave / Spencer Sewage Treatment Plant -- nothing surprises me. I didn't see it on the web sites but do you know if any of the caves are a habitat? Any endangered species in the caves, springs, etc? I should have read more but here's some things cavers can do to help. There is a petition cavers can sign if they want to try to help. Petition to Save the Sharp Farm Also 8 Rivers has a list of what we can do to help. Click HERE

Thanks, I just hadn't read that far yet. So there are 4 known species of invertebrates which are classified as "rare" species in West Virginia and reports of blind cavefish too. Any other species? What is the US Fish and Wildlife Service and/or the Division of Natural Resources doing to protect these 'rare' species? Anything?
" US Fish and Wildlife Service: Our mission is, working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. "

West Virginias "motto" used to be "Wild and Wonderful". The new motto, adopted this year is "Open for Business". One must spend the time to read pretty much the whole site to get a picture of whats really going on here. It defies logic. www.8riverssafedevelopment.com/news/article.php?article=11

Doesn't the NSS have a government liaison that could be contacted for assistance or is this all being done at the local level of government? I know there are a number of NSS members who are government employees.

The NSS is aware and have opposed the Sewage Treatment Project as presently designed and asked for a reevaluation of the design. " The National Speleological Society has endorsed the efforts of Eight Rivers Safe Development to protect the karst and cave resources that would be impacted by the proposed sewage facility. " Here is the Letter from William Tozer PDFI just read the The Slatyfork Sewage Saga Here's a snippet.... " Instead of simply requiring Intrawest, a billion dollar company, to finance the building of a facility to properly treat its waste, the Pocahontas County Commission approved a plan for a ‘regional’ sewer system."

Ok here is some more information of how we can help. " It is time to act. The Sharps have been served a second round of Eminent Domain papers. Our 93 year-old tenant, Evva Shelton, who has lived next to the recently named Evva Shelton Spring for 66 years, was sent her own personal letter from Pocahontas County! Governor Manchin has offered state owned property that is safe. Senator Walt Helmick, chairman of the finance committee, told Evva’s daughter, “The only solution is to move it”. Please encourage him to find funds to do so at 304-357-7980. Governor Manchin can be reached at 888-438-2731. If they do not get a loud and clear message our pristine valley may be a thing of the past. " See www.Sharpsbedandbreakfast.com for updates. Also here's the link to SAVE THE SHARP FARM FROM EMINENT DOMAIN MySpace URL. www.myspace.com/savethesharpfarm

The Slatyfork Sewage Saga "Right along Scenic Highway 55/219 is our red covered bridge, 121-year continuously running Sharp’s Country Store, log house in which Robert E. Lee dined during his first campaign through this area as General." They can just leave General Lee out of this thank you very much!! :-*Yankee's!

This is such a ridiculous display of buffoonery by elected officials it is almost beyond belief! The public outcry should be intense enough to force them to stop doing stupid things. I think that if most people knew what was happening and what was potentially at stake (groundwater pollution, loss of historic resources. etc) they would not allow it to happen. Sometimes all you have to do is get the press on your side and a good photo for them to show what could be destroyed. Maybe a computer enhanced view of what the area would look like after being converted into a sewage plant would help. And I agree that Yankees have no business messin with Robert E Lee!
