Hey all, I was all excited about starting up a new grotto in this area that I am in. My two brothers and I pondered on a name, I asked Sharon and she helped by sending me a link to how to do it.
I was wanting to call our grotto Cumberland Valley Grotto, so I googled it and now I am disappointed to see someone in Tennessee all ready has that name. Since we are wanting to start it up in Kentucky, would be tacky or inappropriate for us to name ours that as well, or should we try a new name all together.
I open to ideas. If you will give me a shout with suggestions.
I have our motto. At least I think we are considering 'See you around, in the undergroud' I think that has a catchy ring to it.
Any one that wishes to through in the 2cents worth, please by all means do.
Thanks
Tony

If you are going for NSS affiliation, you have to have a unique name. How about Kentucky Cumberland Grotto? Cumberland Underground Grotto, and just call yourselves the Cumberland Underground? What other natural features are in your area? Mountains? Rivers? What town are you near? Look at the NSS grotto list, and while most grottos are geographically named, not all are. Also remember, you're likely to be called by your initials, so get some good ones... Cave Hunters of Kentucky --ever heard the song Hunters of Kentucky?
Better to come up with something entirely not Cumberland, so you won't get into big confusion on the Net, or with people who think you are somehow affiliated with the Tennesseans.

One of the grotto names I get a kick out of is the "Near Normal Grotto" which meets near the town of Normal.
I'm sure you could still use the word Cumberland in your name. I can see it being a bit confusing though. You don't want to get confused with those other guys. ;D
Good luck!

Hey, now wait a minute, what's wrong with Tennessee cavers, anyway??
It would be a pleasure to suggest some grotto names. Off the top of my head here are a few suggestions. As far as names go - it might help to know where in Kentucky you guys are located. Commonwealth Grotto (CG) Commonwealth Heartland Underground Grotto (CHUG) Cumberland Valley Speleological Society (CVSS) Kentucky Valley Grotto (KVG) Kentucky Commonwealth Grotto (KCG) Kentucky Area Grotto (KAG) Kentucky Exploration Grotto ( KEG) Kentucky Underground Grotto (KUG) Kentucky Heartland Grotto ( KHG)

Thanks so much for everyones help. I really like the (KEG) name, I may have to run this by my brother. Ok, So now I ask, would it be worth having our own grotto to keep from having to drive all the way to Lexington or Pineville for meetings once a month. We have enough caves here in the Tri-county area that borders my home county to keep us exploring for a while, I am sure. Thanks again for all the input. Again, I am asking for guidence. See you around, in the undergound. Tony

I'd say if you are an hour or more away from the nearest grotto, sure, why not form a new grotto in your area. With the price of gas and everything that goes with it. I don't think you can expect a person to drive much farther than that these days.
Are you trying to attract other cavers in your area to join your grotto, like is there a college close by?

Hey Tony, what about the name Tri-County Grotto (TCG) or possibly Kentucky Tri-County Grotto (KTG)? Do you have enough local caver's to support a grotto? As long as you have caver's that support a local grotto, I see no reason to not to put effort into forming a grotto. Speaking as someone who drives quite a distance to meetings - the drive to attend a grotto meeting can be killer especially if the 'drive' takes longer than the actual 'grotto meeting'!

Yea I had actually thought about Tri-County Grotto my self, and I appreciate the supportive words. I have a couple of colleges here close by, one is an extension of EKU and the other is Univeristy of the Cumberlands. There is Somerset Community College I think as well.
The Bluegrass Grotto is a really good idea, but I think there is already a Bluegrass Grotto in Lexington.
Be back in touch soon.

You need at least a half dozen people to make it worthwhile, since 4 of you would need to be officers, you'd have to draw up a constitution, establish a bank account, and all that paperwork stuff. Also, part of the whole grotto thing is to foster fellowship and idea exchange. I think you need to demonstrate some sort of a need not being filled by current grottos, too. Or at least you used to.

Well, that name is something no other grotto is using, but it would certainly raise a few eyebrows. Welcome to the forum Robert.
