Go out to hear the bats By Leo Leonidou CYPRUS is for the first time participating in European Bat Night this Sunday. Organised by EUROBATS, the event takes place every year in more than 30 countries. Nature conservation agencies and NGOs from across Europe pass on information to the public about the way bats live and their needs, with presentations, exhibitions and bat walks, often offering the opportunity to listen to bat sounds with the support of ultrasound technology. Haris Nicolaou of the Forestry Department yesterday told the Mail the same would be happening here on the island, in co-operation with the Environmental Services and several NGOs “A presentation will be made at 7pm at the Athalassa Environmental Centre in Nicosia, followed by a walk around Ayios Georgios Lake,” he explained. “We will take five bat detectors with us so people can hear the bats.” He added that he hopes the island can participate in the event in future years. Cyprus has 16 species of bat, and is the only EU country to have the Egyptian fruitbat. www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.php?id=34538&cat_id=1
