Gone batty Monday, September 3, 2007 10:50 PM CDT Bat men survey area creatures By BRIAN T. KEHL VINE GROVE: As a rule, bats don’t turn into vampires. They don’t build nests in people’s hair, and they are no more likely to have rabies than skunks, raccoons, dogs or cats. They don’t hunt people, and if they run into one, especially in a tight, cramped cave, it probably is because they are trying to get out of the way. And contrary to popular belief, bats can see. “People say, "blind as a bat,’” said Seth Bishop, a biologist for the East Kentucky Power Cooperative, a group that works closely with many state coops, including Nolin RECC. “They’re not blind, they see normally. They can see as well as any small mammal, but they don’t use vision. They use echolocation.” What bats do is fly around and eat bugs. “They love to eat insects,” Bishop said. “They do feed on mosquitoes, that’s one of the more beneficial things. One of their favorite foods is moths. A pregnant or lactating female can eat up to her own body weight in a night. They have very high metabolisms.” www.newsenterpriseonline.com/articles/2007/09/04/news/news03.txt
