Bat show on the road at BannackBy the Three Rivers Staff - 08/15/2006 BANNACK — Nearly 1,000 kinds of bats account for almost a quarter of all mammal species, and are mostly beneficial. Bats have intrigued and fascinated people for thousands of years. Are bats blind? How do they locate their prey and fly in the dark? Do they get tangled up in people’s hair? Do vampire bats really suck your blood? Do they carry rabies? Find out these answers and more about one of the world’s most fascinating creatures Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the old church at Bannack State Park. Lynette Kemp of Lewis and Clark Caverns will share her extensive knowledge on these incredible Montana residents. She will have literature available on bats as well as plans for building your own bat houses to attract these fascinating and beneficial creatures. Lynette is a member of the Montana Bat Working Group and enjoys giving educational programs on such a misunderstood animal. She is the manager at Lewis and Clark Caverns and began exploring caves while in college in Arkansas. Lynette became fascinated with bats when she began working at the caverns fifteen years ago Park hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day and the Visitor Center is open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Bannack State Park is located 25 miles southwest of Dillon, just 4 miles off Highway 278. If you would like more information please call the park at 834-3413. Article
