Omega Cave System Becomes Virginia's Number One
Records are made to be broken so the saying goes. A new record has been set for the longest cave of Virginia. The new record holder is the Omega Cave System in Wise County at 22.82 miles. The cave system also holds the record for the deepest cave in Virginia at 1,263 feet.
The previous holder of Virginia's longest cave was the Sugar Run Cave System in Giles County at 22.5 miles. The survey of Sugar Run has been declared finished and complete and so it is unlikely that it will regain the lead.
Even though Omega is now comfortable in the lead we can expect for its mileage to grow because there is lots of potential for many more miles to be surveyed. However it was just over eight years ago when Omega had not yet exploded onto the scene. So things can change quickly.
For more details, look for an article in the upcoming issue of the Region Record.
