Congrats all around for your new purchase. I've heard of this cave but don't know much about it. Anyone care to fill in some of us not in your area as to what the cave is like? Maybe a link to some pictures?

Dan, Tumbling Rock cave is located in Jackson county, Alabama, and has a little over 6 miles of horizontal passage and I think a depth of around 450 feet (this is from memory, someone else may provide exact figures or can correct me if I'm wrong). The cave still has remnants of saltpeter mining, and in one room contains a rather rare feature known as an "asphalt ooze", which is a drip of natural petroleum/tar like substance from the ceiling. Here are some images from Tumbling Rock Cave: www.cavingexpeditions.com/album.asp?categoryID=118www.kevinandamanda.com/photos/tumblingrockcave/Also, look at the front cover of the February 2006 NSS News issue for a photo of the Topless Dome in Tumbling Rock. The back cover of the May 2007 NSS News issue has a smaller photo from Tumbling Rock. The SCCi also announced the purchase of Frenchman's Knob Pit in Kentucky. These are really exciting times for SCCi members and contributors. By the way, NSS Director Jay Clark was instrumental in the Tumbling Rock Cave acquisition. All SCCi Board Members deserve a round of thanks for their hard work and efforts on behalf of the Conservancy.

Great links Sharon. Thanks. I do remember seeing pictures and such of the topless dome. Lynn, it looks like Frenchmans Knob is closed part of the year for bats. I'm guessing that restriction will continue.
Anyone have any pictures of Frenchmans Knob. Is it just a pit or is there going passage at the bottom. There must be some cave down there if there is a bat population.....me thinks.

Lynn, it looks like Frenchmans Knob is closed part of the year for bats. I'm guessing that restriction will continue. Yes, I imagine the closed cave dates will stay in place if bats are using the cave. But when the SCCi has time to do the paperwork it will be good for cavers to know the access policy for Frenchmans Knob.

The SCCi has done a great job of getting these two caves for cavers. I don't mind sharing them with the real owners (bats, crickets, salamanders, beetles, etc) though! I'm sure we'll all know the access policies as soon as they become available.
Thanks SCCi!
