At the Huntsville Grotto meeting last night, Jim Hall announced that he's volunteered to host either a pre or post-camp (can't remember which one). But looks like we'll have lots of international cavers in TAG to show around!

Morning all!
Hey Jennifer, that is good news. I had fun with the Australians and the Brits at the pre-convention cave camp in July.
I know someone posted this somewhere earlier, but when was the last ICS held in the U.S?

We talked about that at the grotto meeting... I believe someone said it was in Kentucky in 1981, but don't hold me to that!

I'm trying to remember what else people said about the ICS the other night. Chuck Lundquist actually attended the ICS in Greece, so had all kinds of interesting stories about it. He said that the ICS in 2009 will be held in a small town outside San Antonio. It will be on a college campus (don't know which one) and it sounded to him like they have excellent facilities. Chuck said they're trying to keep costs down for international visitors, so hopefully it will be very economical to attend!

Thanks for the info Jennifer! You're right, it was Kentucky in '81. I knew I had seen that information recently, just had to backtrack. Below is the info I'd seen earlier. -------------------------- This is good news for the Society, which hasn't hosted an International Congress since Bowling Green, Kentucky in 1981.
Average cavers will find the Congress is not an NSS Convention with little organized caving. Indeed, the Congress is usually hosted at a University and consists mainly of technical scientific sessions in geology, biology, paleontology, mineralogy, archaeology, etc. Subsequently, it has a relatively high registration fee, particularly in comparison to conventions. At the Bowling Green Congress, the Society added an abbreviated Convention for one of the weekends; I wonder if any such mini-convention will accompany the 2009 Congress.
The Congress does provide an opportunity to meet cavers and scientists from around the world. _________________ Richard Rhinehart NSS 15822F
coloradocaves.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=161 ---------------------------- It wouldn't bother me if the 2009 Convention were tacked somewhere nearby immediately after the ICS. It would be easier for me to take two weeks in one location at one time, than to take two separate week long trips in widely separate locales.

Hey Cindy, That's pretty cool, not only attending the ICS this year, but going to Greece on any occasion! Just checked the link and you're right, there are an abundance of caving field camps and excursions already being planned. It'll be tough to choose between some of these, as I'm sure some will have overlapping time frames. Here's the URL for the planned caving activities: www.ics2009.us/trips/trips.htmlHas anyone heard anything about the 2009 NSS Convention (i.e. where, when, who)? Thanks in advance for any info.

An interesting news blurb found in the recently published January 2006 issue of the "TSA Activities Newsletter". 2009 International Congress of Speleology It is now official that the ICS and the NSS convention will be combined in 2009. Estimated attendance is expected to be between 1500-2500 people. Anyone who wants to present a paper at the Congress must pre-register. There will be a combined NSS board meeting and ICS planning meeting in March 2006 in Irving, Texas. --George Veni www.cavetexas.org/anl-0106.pdf
