The announcement that this current discussion board was not sanctioned also went out to the WR list. I replied:
What happened next was truly amazing. One NSS BoG member (BL) made a ranting raging personal attack against me. So much so that the moderator for the Western Region list put it on fully moderated mode.
I'm not sure what is going on, but it sure looks very strange. The NSS is going to have a very hard time looking good with all of this going on.

Hummm....as I said in another post some very strange things have been happening this week. I have also experienced some things that were quite similar to what Cindy relayed. What on earth could be causing our BOG members to seem so stressed out? Seriously, what is going on with the NSS?

Indeed - the website crash is an unfortunate, but ulitmately pretty trivial problem. The apparent paranoia of some of the NSS leadership is a whole nother matter. I've been an NSS member for > 25 years, and am now, for the first time, seriously questioning my desire to remain part of this organization!

What's in a name? ? If you started a forum and called it Pret'z Cavetalk", what reason would I have to think it would be a discussion on the price of eggs in China? ?? In sharon's post to other groups she says to use this forum for NSS Communication Well, DUH!!!!!!! I say 10-4 on the administrators taking off their mask. But, it also makes me wonder why you would agree to be a moderator of a forum where you have no idea who your administrator is. Who asked you to be moderator? Why not ask them and share the info with us? johnny come lately...... Here is the post I saw from Sharon: There is a substitute forum that is available to be used for communication until the NSS website Discussion Board is functional again. Anyone interested can use the forum listed below as a substitute for NSS communications if they would like. nssmembersforum.proboards28.com/ Thanks, Sharon **************** It stresses that this board was/is to be used as a substitute until the NSS Discussion Board was/is functional again. The administrator account is a dummy account used for the purposes of creating forums, categories, permissions and such. The moderators are the bosses, authorities, or whatever of the forum. Consider them team administrators if you will. It is a group and no one is interested in being the big cheese. Remember this forum was really a private forum for NSS Members; there was never a need for an administrator. However, since it has become a more public forum (at least for the time being) we have approached a skilled and highly experienced IT person for the position of administrator to handle software issues.

If the NSS Board is opposed to rebuilding an "official" NSS Discussion Board, why could this board not serve that function indefinitely (at least until a change in the current Society administration)?
Assuming the Society will not want to post an official link to this site, many of the member grottos, regions, and sections can post links from their sites, so that cavers who want to discuss topics of speleological interest can do so.
My background is in journalism, and I've always believed in the "free marketplace of ideas." Each of us may not always agree on every topic, and sometimes tempers will rise in heated discussions, but in the long run, the caving community as a whole is better off by having a discussion board.

Even though this discussion board started as a learning tool for several of us moderators from the last discussion board, there is no problem allowing people to post here until another NSS discussion board appears. It's still too early for me to believe that the NSS will never put up another discussion board.
We are getting some flack about the name and I for one am not apposed to changing it. Any suggestions? Maybe the US Caver's Forum? We do not want to compete with the NSS and their forum. That is not our purpose. We are not here to antagonize the BOG either.
Here's some more history behind this DB. Some of it is repeat. Sharon and I found this free software and free server right after the second discussion board was taken off line and before number three appeared. We designed it to our liking and asked several other people to come try and learn about discussion boards and their software. Several of us have the admin. password and several times had the thing pretty screwed up and were able to work through the fixes. Eventually the NSS put up discussion board number three, I applied for a mod position and was accepted. At that time most of us quit using this software. I believe Sharon wiped the posts clean not too long after that. If you notice, most all the admin posts happened on the same day back in July. One of us was bored and noticed the software was still running and played for a day or two. The first real posting didn't start until after the crash and Sharon made the offer to let everyone use this board until the NSS one was/is restored. Once again, the NSS one will have to start from scratch with a new Admin and moderating team. I'm going with Wayne's suggestion in his resignation letter and will not be seeking a moderator position on the next discussion board.

Folks are welcome to use the forum for discussion and communication if they are interested. It was never intended to be and is not a "replacement" for the officially sanctioned NSS Discussion Board. I was shocked to see the disclaimers by BOG members as the message I sent out stated that this was a substitute forum available to be used for communication until the NSS website Discussion Board is functional again. However, I do apologize if I confused anyone or gave anyone a different impression. My bad.
Anyway, welcome to everyone who has joined!

Hey, I understood this board was not a replacement for the NSS Discussion Board. ( which is apparently defunct now) Let me take the time to say "Thanks" for making U.S. Cavers available to all cavers! But also a special Thanks from the cavers who have been suffering from NSS DB Withdrawl Syndrome!
