Bat fungus likely closes caves for rest of the year MAQUOKETA, Iowa — The popular caves at Maquoketa Caves State Park likely will be closed the rest of the year because of the threat of a fungus that kills bats. Daryl Howell, Iowa Department of Natural Resources environmental specialist, said it is “fairly likely” the Maquoketa caves and two others in the area will not be open to the public until next year. The DNR also closed Searryl’s Cave State Preserve in Jones County and Starr’s Cave near Burlington because of a disease called white nose syndrome, which affects bats. qctimes.com/news/local/article_e69d2fd8-78f1-11df-b37f-001cc4c002e0.html
