Caves closed in hope of helping bats By Oren Dorell • USA TODAY • June 8, 2010 A fungus that has decimated hibernating bats in the Northeast is flitting across the country and prompting state and federal agencies to close caves to prevent further spread of the disease by humansrekking through them for recreation. More than a million bats have died since 2006 when the disease, known as white nose syndrome, was first documented in Upstate New York. Now it has spread around the Northeast and has been detected as far south as Virginia and as far west as Missouri. www.courier-journal.com/article/20100608/GREEN/6080301/Caves-closed-in-hope-of-helping-bats
