The NSS BOG meeting in Birmingham AL yesterday Nov 7 2009 resulted in a vote to recommend Kentucky as the site for a new headquarters location to the NSS Headquarters Commission. The NSS is in the process of creating a Headquarters Commission to decide the final location. This commission will be chaired by John Scheltens (as appointed by NSS Pres. Gordon Birkhimer). The three candidate locations offered to the NSS for consideration were Huntsville AL, Bloomington IN, and Horse Cave KY. After the BOG selected Horse Cave KY the Chairman in a short discussion with a few BOG members changed the wording of the recommended site to read a more general location of "Kentucky". Interestingly at this summer's NSS convention the Congress of Grottos (COG) selected the Bloomington IN site as their preferred option.

Hi Dan!
Yes we cruised down to Birmingham for the day and caught the critical action on the vote. We were there quite awhile and talked to a lot of the members present after the vote was taken. The BOG continued for quite awhile after we left to go home it appears. While everyone had their favorite option it will inevitably be up to the commission to decide where headquarters will end up.

I really wanted to make it down there and watch the proceedings. My business with it's end of year projects prevented me from taking the time off. I'm sure it wouldn't have mattered any but I would have really enjoyed visiting with you two again. So they picked a region over one of the specific proposals?? What's up with that?? And if that's the case......why didn't they vote for Colorado? ;D

It would have been great to see you to Dan but the BOG process was just tooooooo painful. If I recall correctly BOG members said something to the effect of ...... Virginia would be a good place for the office due to 'political lobbying'. Kentucky would be a good place for the office due to 'tourist caver dollars'. Huntsville would be a good place for the office due to 'scientific research/education'. Bloomington was just too isolated for human sacrifice. Ok so with that in mind, come-on throw your hat in the ring too. What does Colorado have to offer?

We have Pikes Peak....along with the largest collection of 14000' peaks in the US. We have some of the best skiing in the world......and it's snowing right now!! We have Focus on the Family headquartered here...and they could cure the NSS's disfunctionality. We have the world famous Cave of the Winds located in the middle of the state and they sponsor an NSS project called the Williams Canyon project. With our low humidity and lack of bugs and such...it would make a perfect place to house the library as we are also in the middle of the country giving everyone the same distance to travel and use it. ;D One or two Big Name Cavers live or have lived in Colorado. Hows that for a start??
