A 58-year-old man was found dead at Ginnie Springs in Gilchrist County Friday afternoon after he failed to surface from a cave dive earlier in the day.
The man, who was not identified pending notification of his family, had been out with another diver, the Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office reported.
The other diver, Gary Hildman, told officers the two were in the water when they became separated. Hildman returned to the surface, hoping to find his diving partner. When he couldn't locate him, he contacted staff at the springs and the incident was reported to the Sheriff's Office shortly before 1 p.m.
Divers found the man's body at about 4:26 p.m. in an area known as Henry's Crack, which is part of the cave system called the Devil's Eye, the Sheriff's Office reported.
The Sheriff's Office did not release other details about the diver who died except that he was a local resident.
The cave system at Ginnie Springs is a popular area for divers.
The Devil Spring system is made up of three springs that produce about 80 million gallons of water daily, according to a Web site about the area.
Last year, a man visiting the United States from Switzerland died while cave diving at Ginnie Springs. He started his dive at the opening to the Devil's Eye. His body was later found about 3,800 feet inside a cave system.
