So Chuck are you saying when Tom Rea Retires you do not think a female caver would be just as capable as a male caver in the NSS OVP position.

Woa chill out a bit Lynn, The Chuckster didn't mean to diss women at all! A "newbie dude" can be male or female and I don't have a problem with either one. ;D Shure nuff Mike Hood set the Chuckster straight anyhow. OVP's don't seem to last much longer than a coupla years. I really had no friggin clue about that dude. Thanks for clearin it up for me Mike! I wonder who (dude OR dudette ) will be the next OVP? The BOG picks one out right? The NSS needs a good one man so I hope they do a freakin good job pickin one out! That's gotta be a tough gig though... Good luck BOG dudes and dudettes!

All the VP positions can be difficult and time consuming. The OVP involves frequent travel to Huntsville since the OVP is responsible for the office and its operation. That puts a lot of miles on the ol' car and a fair amount of out of pocket expenses! I wonder who (dude OR dudette ) will be the next OVP? The BOG picks one out right? The NSS needs a good one man so I hope they do a freakin good job pickin one out! That's gotta be a tough gig though... It's always interesting to see who steps up to run. I just wish more than one or two would run. Right--the directors elect the officers.

Hey Mike, any chance you might run?? Not now. I just retired from the Air Force and will likely be starting back to work in the civilian world in August. Starting over, I won't have the vacation time like I accumulated while in the Air Force. Plus, I was OVP from1998-2000, so I've been there, done that!

Oh Dan, if only I had a political agenda.....or hummm...what if I do and am just not aware of it yet But I do have to say ' IF ' I was really needed and ' IF ' I was nominated - unhun, sure, I would give it consideration. But good golly, most all caver's know my heart lies in cave conservation, preservation and protection. What about you Dan? Have you given the position any consideration?

I'm not a good office manager, and even a worse one by living in Colorado. ;D Kelly would be another good name to throw in the hat. Mike, I' ve always heard good things about you and even had the pleasure of meeting you at the Huntsville comvention. Breaking into the civilian world is a big step in life. We get a lot of retired Air Force and Army personel here in Colorado Springs. Couldn't ask for better neighbors. Good luck

I know Mike has served the NSS as OVP in the past, but I agree with Dan, he would make a fine addition to the Board of Governors in any position. Aside from the cavers already mentioned in this thread, I can think of several other well-qualified cavers who I would recommend. One of them being Jay Clark, currently a candidate on the 2006 Director Election ballot. He would certainly have the business management skills and experience needed for the position. Wasn't the OVP position created around 1995 or 1996 with Tom Rea as the first to serve in the position, then Mike Hood, Scott Fee, Colin Gatlin, and back to TR as current OVP? I may be totally wrong here and I could go look it up I suppose....

Sharon, Dan--thanks for the kind words. I enjoyed my tenure as OVP and President. I always got much enjoyment from the NSS, so I wanted to give back to the Society and did so by being an officer. A lot of work, to be sure, but also very rewarding.
Sharon, you're correct about the OVP. Tom was the first, then me, Scott, Colin, and Tom again.
Dan, you wouldn't have to be an office manager since we have Stephanie to do that as our Operations Manager. Making the trip from Colorado would be something to consider, though the OVP does get a meager travel budget to make the trips to the office. It wouldn't pay for your entire trip, but would offset some of the costs.

But...But....But.......I want to be the office manager........ Besides, if you put me in charge, I'd be out there doing everything but my job......I'd be planting trees and flowers all over the place and re landscaping the entrance to Sheltas. Next you'd see me across the street with my skid loaders digging a new foundation for the museum and future home of the library......

Just a word in Tom Rea's defense...he's put in many more and definitely countless hours on behalf of the NSS over the last 40 years (at least) than all the people in this thread (including Mike Hood, though Mike's contributions are definitely significant) combined, probably several times over. Sure, Tom has his unique way of doing things, (sometimes I agree, and sometimes not), but far be it from we 'loyal opposition upstarts' to be unkind to our elders, and he deserves much thanks for his decades of service, even as he finds it time to move on.

Well I am a firm believer that all the cave volunteers deserve to hear a Thank You for donating their time to all the various levels of caving; the grotto's, regions, section's, division's, committee's, survey's, task force's, the NSS, etc, etc, etc, So Tom Rea is included. .........Thank You Tom. You can even stay at our place when you have to do the office business portion. Errrr... wait I guess NSS members don't get to vote for the OVP.

Azureana is indeed correct! Having been a volunteer serving the NSS and other worthy caving entities I often realise that few people care to offer any thanks. So with that I can add my thanks to Tom Rea for all his work over the years. Hopefully he will continue to help when and where he can. I will too.

I've known Tom since I joined the Central Indiana Grotto in 1982. Tom is the one who gave me a nudge into becoming a national committee chairman (the Cave Ownership and Management Committee) and later, further encouraged me to run for OVP in 1998.
Did you know that Tom is the only person to ever hold every officer position, as well as serve as a director? He's also chaired more NSS committees than I can count! He's been a tireless advocate for the Society for nearly 50 years!

No Mike, I did not know that he held every officer position as well as a director position. It appears many cavers have served the NSS for long periods. We also learned recently at a Birthday Party that Dr. William Halliday has served the Society for over 51 year. Check out: A Caving Legend Retires

I hope to meet Tom someday. I too appreciate all his hard work and dedication over the years.
Looks like we have a good rotation going right now. My vote is for Mike Hood followed by Scott Fee. The two of you could switch off for the next few years till we can find a lady to vote for again................. Of coarse, none of us get to vote anyway,.........but in a fantasy world, that's how I'd vote. ...I would... I would....

Speaking of a lady to vote for... I think I heard Cheryl Jones was going to run for Prez. Is that true? It would be really cool to have a lady prez again!
