Remember, I’m not out to justify or demonize the doctored photo that appeared in the Weekly World News. It’s not my work so I don’t have to stand up for it. But it’s obvious, from your comments here, how much it means to some of you out there. I talked to the photographer who took the photo last night. He works for an agency whose photos go all over the world and he had no knowledge that his photo had been doctored. I can’t really quote him further, but the matter is being looked into. www.trenthead.com/2008/10/the-bat-boy-controversy/

32 years ago in 1976 I was the editor for a college newspaper. For our April 1 edition (it really was April 1 on paper day) we put the president's head on a morbidly obese male body, and put the composite in a hall with shiny glass tiles-- very institutional looking. We had a professional news photographer on our staff taking the class to learn to write his own captions, so we had a little bit of "insurance" against backlash.
This was before Photoshop...it was literally cut and paste.
We got a nice letter back from the college pres. (who had confiscated an issue of the entire paper the year before because the paper endorsed legal age students, and not the incumbents for the board of trustees) saying...."Some people will do anything to get ahead."
