Haven't heard much said about the ICS/NSS convention in Kerrville,TX. I wonder if folks know that the $250 Pre-registration fee is due before the end of the year, just (3)months off, after that it goes up to $300 after June. It also appear there are (2)banquets NSS on Friday and ICS on Saturday and the NSS banquet is extra. It does seem a bit higher considering what we are used to at regular NSS conventions. I suspect since the ICS is only held every four years and it runs a full (10)days and has a large number of extra events going on including evening program we should expect to pay more.
I'm not trying to be negative, I can understand that as an International event its going to cost more and be different than what we are used to, but it makes the 2008 convention in Florida look like it was a real bargain. BG.

True indeed. Thanks for reminding all of us procrastinators though. The extra $50 savings could help pay for a tank of gas! I don't know if I'll attend but it does sound pretty interesting and worth the extra money as far as meeting and learning from international cavers!

Thanks for the link Bill now we have to decide if we are attending. I thought there was a topic about the 2009 International Congress of Speleology on the forum -- it is under " Caving Events ' and includes a link to the Karst Horizons web site. Here is the topic link: 2009 International Congress of Speleology

It is actually a 3-fer: the 2009 NCKMS is also folded into the meeting. So, if you pay $120 for the NSS and $120 for the NCKMS, you are getting the International for $10, plus saving on travel/lodging costs for 2 US meetings in different places.
Just don't plan on camping in Kerrville unless you are from the tropics and freeze when it gets about 60 degrees F.

Straight from the horse's mouth:I appreciate everyone’s interest and support of the ICS. Let me make one correction. The early registration fee does not end on 31 December 2008 but one month later on 31 January 2009. At that point it goes to $275 and on 1 June 2009, $300. Yes, the cost is higher than an NSS Convention because it an NSS Convention PLUS an International Congress. It has more events and activities, and it lasts eight days instead of five. If you consider the actual cost per day, it is only $1.70 to $7.85/day higher than the 2008 NSS Convention, depending on if you register early or late. Having this event in the US is a literal once or twice in a lifetime opportunity. We will be the first country to host an ICS twice; the last time was in 1981 before many cavers who are now making significant discoveries were even born. Much of what we now take for granted in terms of techniques, equipment, publications, expeditions, communications, scientific and management advances, and even cave protection laws, were a direct or an indirect result of that ICS. I encourage people to read the 2nd Circular available at www.ics2009.us/2ndcirculars.html to see all that will be going on. Many cavers from around the world already see that they can’t afford not to go, and believe this will be the most significant caving and cave science event ever! Back to deadlines, 1 December 2008 is the deadline for abstracts if you plan to present a paper. This is much earlier than for an NSS Convention because abstracts will be followed by more detailed papers from the authors that will be up to 6 pages long. The papers are due on 1 February 2009 so they can be reviewed and revised, if needed, and then printed in the proceedings in time for the ICS. For details, see www.ics2009.us/papers.html. The proceedings will likely be over 2,000 pages of rich information on the state-of-the-art in cave exploration, science, technique, rescue, and management, that will prove a valuable resource for many years. George Veni, Chairman 15th International Congress of Speleology

From my own perspective... yep Florida was a bargain. The folks who didn't go missed a lot, IMHO.
But I didn't go to the '81 ICS, and I've kicked myself ever since. I wouldn't miss this one!

Hi Dr. B. ..... Who? Oh, I guess that's me. ;D I'm debating on going and better make my mind up soon. Thanks for posting an update. Hey Dan, I'm headed to Colorado day after tomorrow. I've got a conference in Durango, but I'm taking a few extra days for mountain biking. First to Fruita and Moab to go with my niece who's working out there. Then a few days working my way back to Denver around Halloween.

Maybe do some caving?

Maybe do some caving? No, alas, not. I will be visiting with my niece in Moab that day. It's the time she has off work, before she leaves for the season, so it's what got planned. Otherwise I would have tried to make it. On my way back from Durango, I was planning on riding in Salida. I might head through Colo Springs on my way to Denver then.
