Me and the kids went Ridge walking yesterday in the pouring down rain. As soon as we got out of the truck it started. We could hear thunder out in the distance.
I had heard about this cave back in the spring from a local farmer who told me to check it out if i could find it. He told me he had not been to it since he was a kid( about 50 yrs ago) when they hung hogs in it in the summer to cool the meat. He warned me before hand that this was going to be some thick cover to walk through & boy he was not kidding!
After an hour of walking the rige wadding through brush sometimes over my head in the pouring rain we finally walked up on it. You had to be within a few ft of it before you could see it. The entrance is about 4 1/2 ft tall by about3 ft wide. You have to stoop to get in but are able walk by standing right after that. At first it looked like it just went a short ways & then dead ended but after gettting to the end we found that it just mad a sharp turn to the left & kept going we also noticed some light coming in from above. My kids were really getting excited now!! Heck I was too!!
There a 2'x3' pit entrance into the room with about a 15 ' drop to the floor. We found close to 30 salamanders in this room of all colors & sizes. Best thing is the passage still keeps on going! It does get a little tight at this point but you can tell it opens right back up after the squeeze. I did not push it any further since all I had with me was my kids & our Lab. There was a few flowstone formations at the sharp turn but nothing really great.
I never did find anything that looked like it was used to hang the meat so i am not sure if it is even the same cave the farmer told me about. He did not mention the other entrance either. I hope it is not since that means there is still another cave to be found!!
All in all it was a good way to spend a couple of hours with my kids doing something we love to do!
Sorry the pic is not to good but is was taken with my phone which was soaked by this time.
