Flood of protests halts limestone mining threat to Cango Caves areaCathy Dippnall, South Africa: The Herald A THREAT to the delicate ecosystem of the Cango Caves was averted after shocked residents, conservationists and tourism operators voiced their objections to proposals to mine limestone near the caves. Gauteng-based Born Free Investments, which placed a notice in an Oudtshoorn newspaper inviting interested groups to respond by July 24, underestimated the storm of protest their advert would bring. The plan was to mine limestone in three areas in the Oudtshoorn district, including a farm near the caves. The company abandoned its plans shortly after the objections became public. “It‘s clear we (Born Free) underrated the complexity and sensitivity of the area near the caves,” Born Free spokesman Andre Heyl said yesterday.
