Greater Ozarks Audubon Field Trip to Bois D'Arc Conservation area, northwest of Springfield. Search for LeConte's and sharp-tailed sparrows. Meet in the parking lot of Wal-Mart, Sunshine Street and West Bypass. Free. Call 881-8393.
Free events at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center, 4600 S. Chrisman Road, 888-4237:
- Hunter Education, 6-9 p.m. and Friday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Ages 11-adult; registration is required.
- Fall Hiking Foray, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday. Meet at the nature center and carpool to Roaring River State Park, near Cassville. Ages 18-adult; registration is required.
- Bat Cat, 7-8 p.m. Tuesday. Katie Day will discuss these nocturnal animals. Ages 6-adult; registration is required.
Giboney Cave Lantern Tours & "Get Wet & Muddy" Tunnel Tours at Doling Park. Explore the Giboney Cave Outdoor-Underground Classroom by lantern, or take the "Wild Tunnels" Tour. Learn the myths and the realities of the cave. Tours continue Sunday Oct. 21 and 27. Lantern Tours: Shoes will get muddy and wet; participants will have to bend and stoop over. "Wild Tunnel" Tour participants will get very muddy and wet and should bring a complete change of clothes and shoes. Lantern Tours are $2 per person and "Get Wet & Muddy" tours are $5 per person. Open to ages 8 and older. Call 837-5808.
Wild Cave Adventure will be 1-6 p.m. Oct. 21 at Doling and Ritter Springs parks. At this hands-on clinic, participants will learn about cave habitat and life, cave and outdoor safety, protecting caves, coordinating educational and recreational tours, and obtaining permits. Transportation in the afternoon required. Participants will get muddy and wet. Two working flashlights and a change of shoes required; coveralls or complete change of clothes strongly suggested. Open to ages 9 and older. Cost is $10 per person; $20 for a group of three; advanced registration required. Call 837-5808.
