The EKU Rescue School has moved to a fall time slot and the Central Region of the National Cave Rescue Commission will be teaching a Basic Orientation to Cave Rescue (two day) class at the school. The school will be held at the Stratton and Perkins Buildings at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky on September 15 - 17, 2006. The Cave Rescue class will be Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17th. Saturday consist of a large number of class room topics covering all aspects of horizontal cave rescue for two thirds of the day and then everyone will get the opportunity to get down and dirty an practice moving a patient in a litter through a variety of obstacles.
A hands on optional evening session will be available to all students after diner. Students will have the opportunity to practice with field phones, learn how to use a variety of medical gear, and be able to practice securing patients in different kinds of litters. Staff will be present to assist with what ever you would like to learn more about. The session can also be used by the students to pre-plan for the mock rescue. Sunday the skills learned on Saturday will be put to use with a mock rescue in a real cave. The Kentucky Emergency Management regulations state this course or the equillivant is the minimum training required for those responding to cave rescues in the state. This course is highly recommended for all cavers since they already possess the skills and equipment to move quickly through the cave environment.
