State has plan to oust lava-tube dwellerTuesday, September 13, 2005 11:43 AM KIHEI – Charges might have been dismissed against a woman living in a lava tube in the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve, but the state hasn’t given up on trying to get her to leave. “We’ve got a new game plan to continue to take legal action,” said Randy Awo, Maui County branch chief for the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement in the state Department of Land and Natural Resources during an update to the Ahihi-Kinau/Keoneoio Advisory Group Monday. “We have a plan and hopefully it will be an effective plan to get this person to cease activities and eventually find a way to remove her.” Awo was referring to Karen Mayfield, also known as Karen Rodriguez, who has been living in a lava tube above Makena for a year, complete with furnishings. Misdemeanor charges were dismissed last week against Mayfield that alleged illegal camping, disturbing a geological feature and littering. Awo said he wasn’t at liberty to give details of the state’s new plan, but he hoped things would move “as soon as possible.” Charles Kauluwehi Maxwell Sr. proposed a motion that was unanimously adopted to write a letter to Land Board Chairman Peter Young supporting the efforts of Awo and his staff. Maxwell said that it was “a cultural insult” for anyone to live in a lava tube or cave where Native Hawaiians often placed the bones of their dead and other funerary items. www.mauinews.com/story.aspx?id=12364
