Going batty in Fricks CaveConservation group shows off bats during open house at Northwest Georgia cave STEVE VISSER, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution LAFAYETTE — In the 1800s in north Georgia, there are recorded accounts of evening flights of gray bats in such large numbers that they appeared to be a cloud of smoke. By 1969, the bats verged on extinction. People had used everything from kerosene and fireworks to shotguns and tennis rackets to slaughter thousands of the small creatures in their cave sanctuaries from Missouri to Georgia. Full Article
