Conservancy Buys Va. Land for $1.5 MillionJan 16th - 12:05pm WINCHESTER, Va. (AP) - The Nature Conservancy has purchased 110 acres in Frederick County for $1.5 million to improve water quality and to protect a cave, the group said. The property along Buffalo Marsh Run, which runs into Cedar Creek, also contains a cave that the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation's Natural Heritage Department is interested in protecting, said Karen Johnson, the conservancy's land-protection specialist. The exact location of the property, only open to those approved to conduct scientific research, is not being revealed to prevent damage to it. "There are sensitive species that could be harmed," Johnson said. The purchase was supplemented by the Virginia Aquatic Resources Trust Fund and will also help with the Chesapeake Bay Initiative cleanup project. Article
