September 25th is the deadline for submissions for this year's JV Award. Please take some time to honor some of caving's real heroes. These are the people who care for the caves we cherish. These are the people who devote significant parts of their lives to preserve our underground domain. Filling out a good nomination is not hard, if you know the nominee, well. The questions are straight forward. You might have to do some research or enlist others to fill in dates and names. Now is the time to take a few hours and submit that nomination you have thought about.
The award was conceived by the Huntsville Grotto in honor of long-time member, conservationist, cave steward, and SCCI Director John Van Swearingen IV, who passed away in 2001. JV served for many years as the Fern Cave Access Coordinator, providing stewardship of the Fern Cave system and preserve for both the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Southeastern Cave Conservancy.
The purpose of the award is to meaningfully recognize the successful stewardship efforts of an individual, a group of individuals, or an organization that has provided significant stewardship activities for one or more caves, cave preserves, or karst properties, personally conducted over an extended time period. The award, sponsored by the Huntsville Grotto and the SCCI, is also intended to promote long-term cave conservation and stewardship activities and to encourage and thank those individuals and organizations who perform them.
For more information you can read the award criteria and procedures at www.scci.org/jvaward/jvawardproc.html
The award consists of a one-of-a-kind certificate, with one of JV's artistic photographic images in the background, and an honorarium in the form of a donation in the award amount of $250 or more made to the SCCI in the name of the award recipient. The recipient is also recognized with honorary ownership of a special plot on an SCCI cave preserve valued at $250.00 or more.
If you know of a worthy candidate, please contact one of the committee members to submit a nomination. The 2004 award committee members are Judi Carter, Joe Douglas, and Jim Wilbanks (chairman). You can contact the award committee and make submissions to jvaward@scci.org .
Nominations for the 2005 award must be submitted by September 25th 2006. Submissions by email are preferred, but must use the MS Word format award nomination form which is found at www.scci.org/jvaward/jvawardform.html .
