My husband and I generally attend the NCKMS, but after looking at the price this year, we're giving it a pass. We figured that after registration (even the cheap prereg) train fare (with a $100 off coupon, and assuming minimal rail/hotel/raill transportation fee) we were looking at over a $1000 trip, due to the high room rates. (We could stay at a cheaper hotel, but we'd have to drive, and at at the prices of gas, extra 2 nights motel, and meals on the way and back this would likely be a wash). Alternative hotels weren't listed on the symposium site, but we figured that out....as well as checked with the symposium hotel for its discounted rate.
Since we'd be sharing a train ticket for two, and a room, the only thing we'd save by only one going would be the actual registration.this doesn't count any out of pocket drinks, vendors purchases, gratuities, etc.
So, we're going to stay home. Although the NCKMS has always been pricier than convention, do any other people think it is getting priced out of the realm of ordinary, non-subsidized cavers?

Yes, I do believe it is getting priced out of the range of the ordinary caver. It would be great if they could develop a caver specific pricing or caver grant program so ordinary cavers could attend. Even an adopt-a-caver program would be nice.
