Short Trips: Boulder Cave worth the detours even if bats don't cooperateBy GORDY HOLT P-I REPORTER After breakfast at The Kitchen on Enumclaw's Cole Street, we crossed the street to browse through Linden Books and pay respects to the town's first espresso machine (it was broken), then headed east for a rendezvous with bats. Our goal was an Eastern Washington bat sanctuary called Boulder Cave, and while we were at it we intended to connect some dots. The plan was simple: Drive a loop connecting state Route 410 east over Chinook Pass with U.S. Route 12 west over White Pass using the Ohanapecosh Cutoff -- state Route 123 through Mount Rainier National Park, rejoining 410 at Cayuse Pass, the junction just short of the switchbacks to the summit of Chinook.
