Caves teach lesson on climate change With a high-pitched shriek of metal on metal and a loud clang, the $20,000 bat-friendly gate leading to over four kilometres of Rat’s Nest Cave is closed and locked with an eager and adventurous group of Grade 10 students peering out from inside. Dressed in coveralls, climbing gloves, kneepads and headlamps, Canmore Collegiate High School students are separated into two groups. One is led by 30-year-caver and speleologist Charles Yonge, the other by geoscientist Adam Walker. Yonge is owner and operator of Canmore Caverns, the year-round tour company that takes people into the dark depths Grotto Mountain. Yonge is tasked with taking CCHS teachers Ken Symington and Sarah Burke’s ASCENT class less than a kilometre into the cave to learn about climate change specifically, but that is just one of over a dozen subjects covered on the trip.
