Here are two articles regarding the 2008 NPS budget proposals. The first details how the funds will benefit Wind Cave and Jewel Cave in South Dakota. The second article is in regards to Mammoth Cave in Kentucky. ------------------------------------- Caves benefit from budgetBy Katie Brown February 9, 2007 President Bush's $2.4 billion National Park Service budget proposal for 2008, if approved, will mean good news for Wind Cave and Jewel Cave in the Black Hills, cave officials said Thursday. Tom Farrell, spokesman for Wind Cave National Park, said the funding will mean more ranger-led educational programs, additional resource-management protection, more seasonal maintenance staff and increased back-country ranger patrols. The proposed budget would allocate $280,000 for Wind Cave and $84,000 for Jewel Cave National Monument. The proposed infusion of funds - announced this week - is part of the National Park Centennial Initiative to prepare for the 100th birthday of America's parks in 2016. If approved, the presidential initiative represents the largest-ever increase in parks' operational budgets, which pay employee salaries and utilities, according to the park service. Full Article
