Trash itBigger is not better at BaselineBY MARGY BIELLING SPECIAL TO THE OCALA STAR-BANNER (FL) Fourteen years ago, Marion County began a search for a new landfill site. There were several reasons the Baseline Landfill site should not have been expanded. The two outstanding reasons were the karst and sinkhole-prone geology of the area, and that the landfill was on Florida's Majorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway. Marion County did purchase the landfill property from the state in 1996. The Site "R" that Marion County's consultants, Jones-Edmonds Associates, suggested for the new landfill site turned out to be equally bad. It was in the Indian Prairie area north of Anthony-Burbank Road, and most of the drainage from the site, both above and below ground, headed for Silver Springs. The next several sites suggested by the consultants were in the northwest part of the county, deep in "thoroughbred country" and were, of course, politically touchy. The solution to the problem turned out to be no landfill at all. Full Story

Good article Jon. This problem extends to many many karst areas all over the world. We accumulate our trash in concentrated areas out of the way of where we live only to pollute the water we need to survive. Not too smart. I hear they are shipping hazardous waste into Tennessee which has more karst than Florida. Brilliant!
