The Cave Research Team, formed as an affiliated body of the general directorate, worked on a cave inventory in the country, he said, adding that there are nearly 50,000 caves all around the country, about 3,000 of which are suitable for eco-tourism, and 13 are already open as eco-tourism sites.
Yalynkylyc said they currently have enough information about 260 caves, adding, “work is ongoing to turn 98 of them into natural parks. Bat fauna species of 51 caves have been documented and taken under protection. Column basalts in Hatila Valley in northeastern Turkey, lakes in Altynbeþik Cave near the Mediterranean city of Antalya and cavities in Nemrut Kaldera in south-central Turkey and Göreme in Cappadocia have been declared natural parks because of their geological value. But there are too few of these sites.”
