We are considering the purchase of a new GPS (global positioning system). Would anyone care to make comments on what is the best GPS on the market? And please tell why.

I don't know that it is the *best* but the Garmin Etrex Legend has an awful lot of bang for the buck. The basemap is pretty good. The only thing I'd like which doesn't exist are small scale topo maps for download-- I know the memory of 8MB doesn't permit full 7.5 minute coverages, but one would think 15 minute or 1x2 degree map coverages with topography would be possible. It has a small learning curve, (a couple of hours) and the unit is intuitively right-handed (bummer) but the small size, durability and general reliability is a good tradeoff. We shopped for about 3 months comparing features in GPS units under $200, then combined a 20% off sale with an REI dividend, and got it down to $110.

Thanks azurerana! I will go take a look at the Garmin Etrex Legend GPS Unit. Froggle has a good comparison tinyurl.com/oz9tu but it still not as good as cavers opinions.
