Could this be a real cave pearl? CAVE PEARL Set in a ABALONE SEA SHELL--- VERY RARE--- No Aucion - Buy it Now: US $199.00 End time: Mar-17-06 15:28:45 PST (6 days 22 hours) The Seller's Description: You are looking at a VERY rare CAVE PEARL, set in an abalone sea shell. There is a thin layer of epoxy resin over the pearl and it is suspended in the same crystal clear epoxy. I highly recommend that any serious collectors do a google search for "cave pearl" and try to find a better deal or find one up for sale at all. This pearl was formed in a similar manner as a oyster pearl, but in this case it took hundreds or thousands of years to build up the calcite around a grain of sand. tinyurl.com/qzq8q

Or it could be a half-eaten jawbreaker candy. hard to tell. Abalone are also endangered--at least off the California coast. There was a recent article in an enviro magazine (Sierra?, Smithsonian?) about abalone divers. There is a size limit on those which are taken, too.

I emailed the guy. The Seller claims it is a real cave pearl and he found it while landscaping near his house in South Dakota.
