OK, so you missed the deadline to nominate for an NSS award this year. Don't worry if your candidate is in the SERA region you can still nominate them for a SERA award. Last year at the Winter Business Meeting the process for nominations was re-evaluated and a revised process was adopted. The new process is described in detail at www.caves.org/region/sera/SERAAwrd.htm
Below is an overview.
Nominations for SERA Awards will be accepted in writing by the Awards Committee Leaders (SERA Chair and Vice Chair) from any SERA caver or SERA organization on a year round basis. These nominations will be forwarded to the Awards Committee members for review. The nomination must be completed on an award form available on the SERA web site or by mail from the Awards Committee Leaders. The Awards Committee Leaders must receive nominations for awards one month before the SERA Winter Business Meeting. The tentative date (according to Jim Wilbanks) for the meeting is Feb 3, 2007 - more details on this will be available later from the Chattanooga Grotto.
Nomination forms and a complete description of the awards are available on the website. Below is a listing of the awards with a brief statement about the award.
Francis McKinney Award - The nominee will have been actively involved in several types of caving, be it mapping, horizontal, vertical, etc. for more than ten years and will have contributed to organized caving by holding grotto or regional office.
Richard Schreiber Award - This award recognizes those SERA cavers of less than ten years experience, and who have been openly involved with cave projects or studies in the Southeastern United States.
Alexis Harris Conservation Award - The Alexis Harris Conservation award recognizes individuals or groups who have achieved effective cave and karst protection or preservation while allowing for caver access in the southeastern United States.
Larry S. Adams Landowner Appreciation Award - This award is named in honor of Larry Adams. His ability to communicate and establish relationships with landowners provided cavers access to caves with sensitive owner relations. This award recognizes individuals or groups who are landowners or land managers in the Southeast United States whose efforts have been in the interest of SERA cavers.
These awards are intended not only to recognize previous accomplishment, but also to encourage future accomplishment and contribution.
There is one more award, the SERA Meritorious Service Award, but this award is to be nominated and voted by the governing committee at the SWBM. Therefore no written nominations will be accepted and you must be present at the meeting to nominate.
