Good News from Meredith Hall Johnson, 2006 NSS Members Manual Editor
Hi NSS Cavers!
The 2006 NSS Members Manual was sent to the printer today. We anticipate it arriving in your mailboxes by mid to late June. Yay!
Thanks to the members of the Members Manual Committee: Gordon Birkhimer (ads), Bob Hoke (cool facts and databases and preparing for printer), and Scott Parvin (design and layout). We all did a wonderful job, but can't do it without YOUR help in keeping your information current at the NSS Office!
Thanks, Meredith Hall Johnson 2006 NSS Members Manual Editor
P.S. Feel free to reprint this notice in your grotto newsletters (hey, a filler!) or on your Web sites and listservs.

Explain this: How does a member's manual get from Huntsville to Colorado in less time that it takes to reach Missouri?
I really should have married that guy whose last name started with "A", not "V"....
(I'm a Family Life, so all the pubs come addressed to him. Hey, we're saving trees, and another reason never to divorce.)

I think the new manual SUCKS! Why aren't the names listed by state anymore? Its basically useless to me now, unless I know who I'm looking up, but that's usually not the case. So great!

;D Completely understand your frustration Itabot. However they will go back to the state listing with the next Members Manual. The MM alternates on an every other year basis, rotating between alphabetical listing and state breakdown of members. That's why many of us keep the last two MM's on hand.

Every other year it is printed by state.. .................because a lot of other peole think it sucks having it printed by state and not last name. ;D Wait a year and life will return to normal.......for a year.

.......because a lot of other peole think it sucks having it printed by state and not last name. ;D I thought about that. I guess you can't please everyone all the time. I've just been trying to start a new grotto lately and I was waiting for the new manual to see if there was any new members in my area that I could contact. What am I supposed to do now? Go through all the names and look for people in Colorado. That would take forever.

Hey Matt,
Contact Stephanie at the NSS Office and explain to her what you are doing, she may be able to send you a listing of recently joined NSS members or help you in some other way. She can be reached at nss@caves.org or (256)852-1300.
Good luck on starting up the new grotto!

Speak for yourselves - I find the state-by-state listings a pain in the butt! But I accept that alternating the listing style each year is probably the best way to keep the most people happy. I move a lot. Each year, I live in 2 or 3 different states - and none of them are the so-called "home state" I list in the members manual. I don't really give a rats about who lives in what state. The best way to for me to contact cavers in each new location - if I don't have prior connections already - is to find the nearest grotto and go from there. For what it's worth, I believe my primary grotto gets an annual email from the NSS with new in-state members listed - plus a list of those who have not renewed their NSS membership. Oh, and my long-awaited nationally alphabetized manual still hasn't arrived...
