www.highspringsherald.com/articles/2008/03/20/news/news07.txtGroup to clean sinkhole near proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter in Alachua ALACHUA -- A Mill Creek Sink cleanup will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 22. The site is owned by the cave diving club and is rarely accessible to the public but has an important karst feature, organizers of the event said. The sink was talked about when Wal-Mart was first planning its supercenter store in Alachua near Interstate 75. The supercenter is planned to be built on the other side of U.S. 441, across the road from the sink. Anything that goes down that sink ends up in the groundwater and eventually surfaces in Hornsby Spring at Camp Kulaqua, organizers said. The Speological Society will be partnering to conduct a cleanup of the area around the sink. No one will be getting in the water or even on the slope down to the water, but rather around the sink. The public is invited to take the rare opportunity to see this unique karst feature. Volunteers can park behind Sonny's, just off U.S. 441, near the I-75 interchange. Lunch will be provided to volunteers. Sponsoring the cleanup will be: * Karst Environmental/Karst Productions * Progress Energy, Alachua County * Sonny's * Current Problems * The Speological Society. Sign-up is required so food amounts can be planed correctly. To sign up, contact Fritzi Olson at 352-264-6827.
