Sure. I was in a bit of a rush this morning so I didn't post too much. Not really knowing what else to do, I tied 7, 45' long strings together in attempts to get a good idea of the depth. This was pretty neat because I was able to determine where I was in the pit due to the number of knots I passed on the way to the bottom. I also attached a glow stick to the end of the rope to ensure that it didn't get tangled on the way down. This all went as planned until I began climbing. It wasn't until I was ~100' above the floor that I noticed the glow stick swinging wildly around the base of the rope. As I climbed, the rope had been dancing around until it caught the string, and began to tangle the two together. It took me about 10 minutes to pull up the rope (by the sting) and untie the two. This continued to be a problem all the way up. I must have been on rope for close to half an hour, but in the end, I got my measurement. I suppose it was worth it, but it would have been nice to have milked the drop for another 15' Maybe the next deep TN pit...

Should also add that on future survey trips we will have access to a disto. Not only will we be getting an accurate measurement of the pit from the rig point but also from the bottom of the pit up to the highest point, which should prove to be much higher than the current rig.

On Saturday I returned to the pit to measure it with a piece of string. All went well until I began climbing out, and I got hopelessly tangled. There were points where I was lifting 200'+ of rope by the cord itself in effort to separate the two. <blah> After about 30 minutes, I was back to the top with my measurement. Move over Mystery Falls because we've go a 285' In addition to measuring the pit, our team has begun the survey of the cave in its entirety. Should take a while, but there will be more to come. Good job Mike! So, I take it the 279 footer is now the 285'? Unless you all have found another deep pit.... Congratulations guys!...keep us updated on the cave survey progress.

I expected the new rig to be much higher than the 259 foot rig point. Looking down the canyon at the where you were traversing across the pit I figured at least 305 feet. I guess my eyes were fooling me.

I told Chad tonight that I thought 285 was a bit short and he agreed. I think Mike must have lost one of his strings on the way up. HA! I am gonna stick with my initial guess of 305 until you get a final figure.

You're welcome Acenthahole. I think everyone here likes hearing about the exploration and cave survey you guys are doing. The new pit depth is a pretty important caving factoid...appreciate y'all letting us know about it. And thanks for the compliment.

Either that, or Im blasting out flowstone at the bottom of the pit!

Yeah, blasting flowstone would definitely help with the depth measurement!
