Well, here is was Friday and my two brothers and I decided to head out to Rockcastle County and see if we could locate the Across the Road cave. We trekked up and down the ridges where the data we had said the cave was supposed to be, but was unable to locate the cave entrance.
However we did find a new hole, at least we think it was new, it was a small hole with water running in it. We don't think this was the cave we was looking for because it doesn't match the map we have in our possession, and the data said this particular cave was supposed to be a dry cave.
We went across the road to the north side of the Sinks of Roundstone cave and found a small crack in the wall next to the railroad tracks. We proceeded in to this crack and after a tight side crawl(really tight for a big boy like me ) found an opening where we could stand. There at that opening we found the top to a dome, we think leads inside the main cave system. However we was pressed for time and didn't have our rappelling equipment with us so we didn't try to lower into this small pit area.
We are excited about going back and trying to mark the area with some marker tape or string and then going in the main entrance to the area where that we think this openned up to and see if our hunch is correct. We will have to make a long day off it though.
We did see a Suburban there at the Sinks cave and was wondering if there was anyone on here that might have been there that day. If you was there about 1030 am on the 10th of November, drop me a line or reply to the post. Maybe we can review notes we each have and see if our hunch is correct.
This concludes my little cave report that ended up being more of a hiking expedition than a cave exploration, but hey, it was all good. That , to me, is part of caving. Finding the unknown and possible locating new holes.
Enjoy , and Cave Hard... See ya around in the underground..
