Saturday, 1/28/06, I had the chance to do The Diggings Pit, in North Alabama, at last. I saw this pit for the first time during the SERA 1999 Cave Carnival, but did no get to do it. Did Flying Rock Well that weekend. I rode up to Scottsboro, Saturday, and meet up with Milton Poskey. After loading up, me and him drove over to the pit. It had been awhile since me and him had been to the pit, so we spent some time walking on the mountain untill we found it. After rigging the pit, I made my way down the huge sloop to get to the actual lip. For those who has been there, you know what I am talking about. The Diggings Pit requires two large rope pads. The rig point puts your rope against a huge boulder on the lip, that cause a rub point. After padding this rock, you pad the lip below it. You need a long, wide pad for the lip. Diggings Pit is a broken drop that involves a 80' enterance drop, followed by a 30' pit, and then a 27' pit. All 3 pits can be done on a 200' rope. A lot of large Doom Rooms and horizontal cave is past the last pit, but with me just bouncing the pit, the horizontal cave would have to wait to another day, since I was the only one doing the pit. But the view is out of the pit is real nice. One of the best vertical caves I have done to date.
