State erects barriers at entrances to old mines to protect visitors John Koopman, Chronicle Staff Writer Thursday, January 17, 2008 Printable Version Email This Article (2) More... On the far reaches of the greater Bay Area - beyond the suburbs, past the horse stables and up over the green hills where cattle outnumber humans - there is a hole in the ground. The hole is drilled into the side of a hill, and someone has spray-painted the words "Dont enter death" on the wooden frame at the entrance. It's a crude, harsh, misspelled warning to would-be explorers and vandals to stay out of the abandoned mine. The state went a step further Wednesday, as workers with welding torches installed the last chunk of a metal grate designed to keep people out of the mine, but allow bats the freedom to come and go. "These places can be real dangerous," said Cy Oggins, head of the state's Office of Mine Reclamation. "Every year, we have people get killed or hurt, or have to be rescued, after they go exploring some of these old mines." www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/01/17/BA6FUGEFP.DTL
