Pigeon Mountain Caving

The caves on Pigeon Mountain are open to cavers. However to visit these caves the Georgia Department of Natural Resources requires that you sign in. To do this there are several card boxes located on the area. For Pettyjohns and Anderson Spring the boxes are near the entrances. For Ellisons (all entrances) the box is located at the Blue Hole. For Flowing Stone the box is located in the shed at the gate just after you turn off the highway onto Blue Hole Road. Since 1981 these cave cards have documented many a cave trip. They also aid in justifying money to protect caves, locating overdue cavers, and making rescue easier so please always fill out the card.
To avoid problems also be aware of certain laws that apply to visiting Pigeon Mountain. First the speed limit on all area roads is 20 miles per hour. FYI, they actually run radar on those dirt roads. Second, camping is permitted in designated areas only. Legal campsites are posted with signs and include: Pettyjohns (past the cave on the right only). Blue Hole Road (on the right halfway out the road) Sawmill Lake, Estelle Trail Head, the Pocket walk in site (above the waterfall in the field), and if backpacking on area trails. If you are camped anywhere else you will get an expensive ticket. The only place you can consume alcohol is while camped in one of the designated camping areas. This means you can get a $360 ticket for any alcohol consumption any where else. Alcohol and caving do not mix, leave the brew at home.
Pigeon Mountain is open to hunting each year and the 2006 dates for deer are:
Archery, Sept. 9 - Oct. 19
Firearms adult/child Oct 21-22
Firearms Nov. 8-11
Firearms Dec. 6-9
For further information on Crockford-Pigeon Mountain Wildlife Management Area contact the DNR region office at 706-295-6041.
Permission is granted to post or publish this document in its entirety to any newsletter or other caving list. Safe cavin, Allen Padgett
