Philip Moss announced last night at our grotto meeting that Don Shofstall, NSS life and FE of Evansville Indiana passed away at home on Tuesday. Shofstall was 80. He was very well known in the last few years for MCing the NSS Convention banquet, and/or leading the toast to cavers no longer with us. He also was extremely well-known in the Midwest Caving community, having been a fixture at MVOR for many many years. obits.courierpress.com/Link.asp?I=LS000094748820XHave a drink and a smile for Don if you knew him. He'd like that.

Thanks. I knew Don S -- we were both in Club 69 (it's an MVOR thing, and it's not what you think) -- a genuine character. He will be sorely missed, esp. with this being the 100th MVOR. I'm only an acquaintance, and knew him after his best caving days were past.

Was he the fellow doing the toast at this year's convention? I recall an elderly caver doing so who did a fine job of it. In any case he has passed on to a place of never ending virgin borehole filled with fantastic speleothems and endless adventure. I just hope he saves some booty for the rest of us when our time comes. I hope that all his family and friends cope well with his passing.
