Does this mean it is the NSS News AND the Journal Of Caves & Karst Studies Hey Rock, Yes, I believe that would be the price for the two ( NSS News & JCKS) combined, though there appears to be some markup in price. It would be less costly for a person to subscribe to one or both publications thru the NSS, at least according to the prices listed on the NSS website. Here are the subscription rates per item if a person only wished to receive one or the other. NSS News * one year: $23 * two years $44 * three years $65 Journal of Cave and Karst Studies * one year $23 * two years $44 * three years $65 Mail the NSS publication subscription form found here www.caves.org/pub/nssnews/pubsubform.pdf with payment to: National Speleological Society 2813 Cave Avenue Huntsville, AL 35810-4431 or I'm sure either of these folks will be happy to help anyone interested with subscriptions; Stephanie Searles at manager@caves.org or 256-852-1300 or Annette Nayman nss@caves.org Here is the online subscription link also if anyone is interested: www.caves.org/pubsub.shtml

I guess I do not understand why the NSS would need to sell the magazines through Amazon.

Well, I don't know for sure, but it may have something to do with financial concerns the Society has experienced or may experience in the future. The following are excerpts from the March 2006 Sec/Treas Report prepared for the Spring BOG Meeting. <snip> A budget for the 2006–07 fiscal year was approved by Executive Committee. It is a fairly lean budget though it calls for revenues and expenses of $529,000. It was a bit more difficult than some budgets because it could project only eleven months of revenue, but many of the expenses are not reduced from the current twelve month budget; the News will have only 11 issues, but the Members Manual and the Journal will have the same number of issues.
The Society has many costs that are essentially fixed, such as the News, Journal, office and staff expenses, and insurance, though their costs tend to increase each year. If the Society cannot significantly reduce expenses, as it appears it cannot, then it is obligated to increase income. No one wants to increase dues. The two things that would go the furthest toward increasing the Society’s revenue would be to increase membership and to publish more books. Are those areas being given sufficient emphasis?<snip> www.caves.org/nss-business/reports/mar06/s-t.html

The NSS has has subscription only for years. Realistically, why would a library or other corporate entity need to be a 'member'? Yes, I know they also have institutional memberships, and those also run more than your typical Joe Caver signup. I'm not sure why the first two posters have their t-shirts in a twist. The subscription should include JCKS and Caving Accidents. I don't think subscribers would get the Member's Manual, (which is the only thing to actually be concerned about.)

Maybe this will help the NSS bring in new members. I would like to see the NSS News distributed through book outlets such as Borders. At the least, the NSS should be selling them to college and university book stores for distribution. The NSS could and should be capitalizing from their magazine sales. They have the corner marketed for now, and it's only a matter of time before someone starts putting out a national caving magazine.

I agree with Dan I believe it is just a matter of time before some entity develops a National Caver Magazine. Don't you think when that time comes it will most likely greatly decrease the Society’s magazine revenues? I wonder if they have even considered this possibility when planning for the future of the NSS?
