Since April, Kashmer’s bat rehabilitation center in Alexandria Township has been nurturing the six bats New Jersey biologists rescued from certain death. They had been found convulsing and covered with a mysterious white fungus in their hibernation spot, or "hibernaculum," at the famous Hibernia mine in Rockaway Township. www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010/11/nj_biologists_tag_cured_bats_t.htmlIt'll be interesting to see if this works out well for the bats or not......

Brian, This is one of the best articles I've read so far. I wish it went into more detail on how she is able to get rid of the fungus from the bats. I wonder if she is wiping them down with Lysol or a bleach solution? Looks like there is hope. I can't believe they are still bringing up this one bat in Oklahoma to show how far the disease has spread. It's like the bat was planted there or something. Maybe hauled in there on purpose.

Thanks Dan. I agree it is interesting.
As for planting a WNS infected bat in Oklahoma - Yep you never know how far some people will go to get what they are after. I find it very likely that a bat could be transported in a truck or train accidentally while it was flying around looking for a dark place to "hang out". if the vehicle ended up in Oklahoma and the bat flew out there - voila! This sort of thing happens all the time actually. There is scientific evidence to prove it. Some bats cross oceans this way! I suspect the sudden appearance "out west" had more to do with the nervous government folks trying to get a jump on closing up all the caves and mines on federal lands. I know of at least one crew working furiously to do this right now near Las Vegas. I do believe federal caves closed will not open for a long long time if ever. It's so much easier for them to deal with when nobody has access.
