I read through the epic Schroeder's post today! WOW, I've never seen such an intense thread. It was cool that moderators didn't quash it, but then again I hope it's the last flame war on the board for a while ... Anyhow, here's the question about NSS numbers: if your NSS membership lapses and then you renew it, do you get your old number back or a brand new one? Someone in the SPC thread had a real low NSS number but quit - that's what prompted the question. Thanks!

Hi Clint, Yes, if a person rejoins the NSS they do get their original NSS number back. The number is assigned for life.

Yea new numbers are one thing the NSS will likely never run out of. Of course when they get to ten digits sometime in the future our pitiful 5 digit numbers will seem really low!

Yeap, if your membership in the NSS lapses for oh say 30 years and then you renew, as a NSS member you get the same old number back.

Sometimes when people get into one-upsmanship vis a vis NSS numbers, I just get this mental image of prison intake for convicts-- you know the front and side profile with the prisoner number below it? And wonder--why? Why me, God? *|:-)
Actually, Sharon, they are not assigned for life. They are assigned FOREVER...it's not like a bank account, or ham call sign, where they recycle them after waiting a decent period after the expiration of the number holder.

I stand corrected...I guess ya can take some things with you when you go. ;D ;D
