www.whnt.com/Global/story.asp?S=6267225Reality was not near that dramatic. A 16-year boy entered Dunham Cave AL#329 in Marshall County around noon yesterday. Marshall County agencies responded when the report came in that he had not returned home. Huntsville Cave Rescue Unit and Chattanooga/Hamilton County Rescue Service - Cave/Cliff Team were paged out around 4:00 Central. A quick search team lead by a caver/trained cave rescue person did not find him in the "easy" passage. 2 teams made up of HCRU started a deep search and CHCRS sent in a 3rd team to the more complex stream passage. He was located deep in the cave, in the dark, with failure of his single light source. He was lead out, unhurt around 7:30 Central. Dunham Cave has 4,000 total feet of surveyed passage. A main passage that runs North-South with a parallel stream passage. Distance from entrance to end/sump is around 2,000 feet. A bit complex in area where the 2 passages connect and some big breakdown rooms.

The only drama, and this is no joke, I got chased down the main stream passage by a beaver. The irony! ;D Teach me to poke fun at beavers on TAGnet.

Humm....this proves you never know who is subscribed to Tag-Net and reading the posts. ;D ;D ;D ;D Good job on finding the boy Tim and Brad! Sounds like we have a budding young caver on our hands, hopefully he can find a grotto to help him out a bit. At least he told someone where he was going. Thanks for posting the rescue report Tim! This type of incident would not have been dramatic for you guys (well, other than the beaver episode ;D), you have a lot of experience with this sort of thing. From a mom's perspective, I can assure you his mom found it dramatic. ;D BTW - I liked your post on Tag-Net Brad. Who'd a thunk a beaver dam would have generated that much chatter. ;D

I can't take credit for this one. The call came in right at Atlanta rush hour. All I did was have 2 cell phones (and Berta's Blackberry) going non-stop from the time that I got the first page until Buddy Lane said "..he is out. He just walked right past me". Let's see...who all did I talk to? HCRU while in route, CHCRS while in route, the IC, Operations, State Park ranger, HCRU on site, CHCRS on site..... and on and on and on... Oh, and then there were all the follow calls to make and the debriefing calls and...and...and...don't for get American Caving Accidents Report, Editor Bill Putman (who lives less then 2 miles from me and Berta, who was also stuck in ATL traffic). Both cave teams and local agencies fell that this one went very well!

Yeah I think it was pretty accurate. He went almost to the back of the cave and at some point his light failed. He sat on a rock and waited. It was a stream cave with some waist deep water in places. I am guessing he got pretty cold waiting since it would have been chest deep on him. I would have never guessed he was 16 years old. He looked 11 or 12.
Yeah the beaver incident was rather hilarious. I was in nearly waist deep water and I felt something hit my leg.......then it made a big splash in front of me. I didn't see the beaver for all the running I was doing. Yeah, laugh it up, I was running. When the others came through, they asked if I saw that big beaver nest back there. I knew right then I was gonna catch hell for running from a beaver......but I had to tell them.
Word must get around the beaver community fast. I could have been on a FOX exclusive "When Beaver's Attack"

Word must get around the beaver community fast. I could have been on a FOX exclusive "When Beaver's Attack" I am soooo tempted to post a reply to this one but decorum prevents me from responding as I would like to! ;D I have heard however some guy got bit by a Beaver after thinking it was dead while he held it upside down by the tail. Suffice it to say that he was left with but one of the two mammalian protuberances we are born with on our chests. Ouch...

A follow up article on this cave rescue: Missing teen found in caveMarch 29, 2007 A teen who got lost in a cave when his flashlight quit working was found about 4,000 feet into the dark cavern and was back home Friday. Rescue workers found Justin Lovett, 16, of Hazel Green unharmed Thursday night, several hours after he was reported missing in the cave. "When the boy's flashlight quit, he just sat down, which was a smart thing for him to do," Paul Evans of the Marshall County Sheriff's Department said. "It took about 45 minutes to walk him out, but he was OK." Authorities said the teen was visiting his grandmother in Grant when he decided to explore the cave about noon Thursday. His mother called authorities about 2 p.m. when he didn't return. Article

How odd. There is a Hazel Green in Missouri, too. Now, I know there are Springfields eveywhere, but Hazel Green???
