The underworld goes hi-tech Len Ashworth, Lithgow Mercury NSW scientists are leading the way in cave conservation with the establishment of an air and water monitoring program for the Jenolan Caves. Project manager Steve Meehan from the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change said the program is the first of its kind in Australia and aims to protect the caves, which include some of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. He said the monitoring program, which uses specially designed sensory instruments to detect minute changes in air and water quality, may serve as a pilot for similar programs at other karst environments where human activity could impact on natural and cultural values.
